Urban Mission

Development of the Project 2007-2010

In June 06 at the Further Steps annual reporting event (see History of the Project 2005-06) the endorsing bodies called for the Project to be extended. In September 06 the joint managing organisations - ECUM and the Methodist Church – made a commitment to securing the funding for a further three years to take things through to the centenary of the first world mission conference in Edinburgh in 1910. Already a major Christian trust has made a grant that enables continuation to February 08.

One of the needs identified in the initial three years has been the lack of administrative continuity for urban networks and so the Project is expanding its function to offer that to both specialist and denominational bodies.  The UK Urban Mission Congress Trust that organises the triennial Jesus in the City congresses, and the City Centre Churches Group are already in discussion on this. The other main areas of work for the next three years are:

1. strengthening the Christian presence in urban areas, and working towards creating a national coalition to work to achieve that

2. undertaking the necessary proactive work to link Black-led congregations, churches and parishes appropriately with general sources of support and networks

3. promoting joint endeavours in recruitment, training and education for urban mission and ministry
